my phone keeps going to silent, how do I get it to ring every time I get a call

Have you checked out the different modes, such as Do Not Disturb?

I have looked at do not disturb but find it confusing. I just do not want the phone to ever go on silent,

If you don't have any other odus activated, you could check the quick settings to see if silent mode was activated by mistake.
